Most Notorious Talent: Joi Unspeakable

In this lifetime, it's often difficult to meet people that you just click with and don't ever feel the need to question it.

Joi is one of those people that you cross paths with and try to figure out why the universe never rotated to where we were dropped into each other's circles sooner!

Pack up your worries and enjoy your rinde on the Joi Experience.

State your name and location for our readers.
Joi "Unspeakable" Donaldson. Southside RVA

What’s your occupation(s)?
Writer.  Photographer. Artist (one day) formally known as starving.

Did your occupation choose you or did you choose it?
Poetry was one of the few means of communication I had to express myself in the midst of a tough childhood. I've been writing since age 7 and I carried a disposable camera with me everywhere starting in middle school. They chose me.

If you could work with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
I would sit at the feet of Mother Maya Angelou and learn as much as I could on how to walk what you write. I'd work in the writing rooms of Shonda Rhimes and Issa Rae. Have coffee with Richard Linklater.

What keeps you motivated?
Knowing somewhere someone is questioning everything. All they have is right at their grasp and they're afraid to move. Letting them know they aren't alone is the biggest hill to overcome but it's what keeps me going.

What’s your Black Girl Magic Superpower?
Overthinking and ability to make the coconut oil stash stretch as far as possible.

Favorite Pastime outside of your occupation?
Riding out to my fave podcasts, watching Netflix documentaries.

Describe yourself using three song titles (include the artist).
Wildflower - New Birth
Break the Shell - India Arie
Harder to Breathe - Maroon 5

Guilty Pleasure?
Way too sweet vanilla chai tea.

Name one thing people don’t know about you.
In my head I'm constantly thinking I'm in the black woman version of The Truman Show.

TTSLRVA (Thick Thighs Save Lives RVA) is taking the city by storm.  What’s next for the campaign?
Take over the worrrrrrld *maniacal laugh* and gain notoriety, wealth and fame.

If you could share anything with your 16 year old self, what would you tell her?
Go to the farthest college possible. Don't date that guy. He cheated. You deserve better. Strive for even more than you think you're capable of. Recognize that depression early. No, you're not fat.

What makes you so Notorious?
I don't know another way to be.
