A ModGyrl Cosmetics Exclusive

In honor of Mother's Day, we decided to share a recent interview with our good friend and family member, Melanie of Modgyrl Cosmetics. Melanie has always been an avid supporter of Notorious Styles and we will always support her and make sure that we are constantly representing ModGyrl.

We're so excited to be able to have interviewed you before and after your revamp of Modgyrl Cosmetics! We love your new inserts, and your new labels! What made you want to modify things?
Thank you so much again for giving me another opportunity. I personally wanted to step it up a notch, I wanted to have a more professional appearance, also it helps the custmer to actually know which color they are wearing on their lips, long after the color is ordered.

Tell us what being a Modgyrl means to you and why you're so passionate about your business.

To be "Mod" is soemone who is leading the way in new developments, innovations, and ideas. That is how I came up with the name "ModGyrl", even though lipstick has been on the scene for decades, there is always new avenues to pursue regarding lipstick and the cosemtic field. The products are all natural and hand crafted and each color is unique and has it own special formula, so when you become a ModGyrl, I can guarantee you that no one else has the color that you have.
You know I'm an avid supporter of Modgyrl Cosmetics because I love how you get in knee deep and handcraft each one of your lipsticks, nail polishes and palettes on your own. Seems like you'll need to start doing some hiring soon! Are you interested in expanding Modgyrl and the different types of cosmetics you produce?

Yes, I have some new developments on the way. The cosmetic world are truly advocating for lip liners, and I honestly do see the huge differece that it makes when applying the lipstick. I have already started on the liners, so I will be introducing them very soon. Also, I am looking to have more "matte" colored lips in the near future, and later on down the line eye shadow as well.

Black business owners often have to fight to get recognized and prosper yet you have become so successful. What do you think sets you apart?

I believe there are a few things that set me apart. The first thing is the customer service aspect. The customer is so important. Without customers, there is no business. My customer service is outstanding and I believe pays a huge play in my business. I talked a little before about each color being unique, and I definetly feel like that sets me apart as well. Colors may look similiar, but they are not, the formual is in my brain, so being a ModGyrl in general, is already being set apart because there is no replica to the products. The packaging is fun. The colors are fun. And the formula is unique. Anytime I want to make a new color, I do not have to wait on anyone else to make it for me, I am the manufactuer, the distrubtor, and the supplier, that sets me apart.
We spy new spring colors!!!! Tell us about the new shades you've developed.

I wanted soemthing soft and pretty for spring. So there are 9 new colors in the spring collection, that ranges from pinks to purples to peaches and nudes. This Spring collection has pushed the ModGyrl lip collection up to 50 colors now and some of the formulas also include a "cream" based lipstick.

Being that you're the new mother of a young girl, I'm sure your perspectives of other young girls and boosting their self-esteem has been enhanced. What advice do you have for young black and brown girls who want to be entrepreneurs but don't think they have what it takes to do it.

If you have a passion and a heart for something do not let anyone tell you that it cannot be done. When i first started this lipstick line I thought that I had to outsource it through overseas to becaome successful. Where there is a will there is a way. There are always more than 1 way to skin a cat. Determine and purpose yourself to achieve your goals. STUDY and RESEARCH. TRY TRY TRY TRY and TRY agian until you get there. Never be the person that looked back and said I should have done that, DO IT!
